چکیده

The interaction of an ion-collecting sphere at floating potential with a flowing collisionless plasma is investigated using the particle in cell code SCEPTIC. The dependence of floating potential on flow velocity for a conducting sphere is found to agree very well with the OML approximation, which ignores the asymmetry in the plasma potential. But the charge, even on conducting spheres and at zero flow, is not well represented by using the standard expression for capacitance. Insulating spheres become asymmetrically charged because of ion collection asymmetry, and their total (negative) charge is considerably increased by flow. The collection flux asymmetry is documented for both conducting and insulating spheres and is not greatly different between them. The drag force upon the sphere is obtained from the code calculations. It shows reasonable agreement with appropriate analytic approximations. However, numerical discrepancies up to 20% are found, which are attributed to uncertainties in the analytical values.

Forces on a small grain in the nonlinear plasma wake of another.

The transverse force on a spherical charged grain lying in the plasma wake of another grain is analyzed to assess the importance of ion-drag perturbation, in addition to the wake-potential-gradient. The ion-drag perturbation is intrinsically one order smaller than the wake-potential force in the ratio of grain size (r(p)) to Debye length (λ(De)). So ion-drag perturbation is important only in no...

Ion Collection by a Sphere in a Flowing Plasma: 1. Quasineutral

The spatial distribution of collisionless ions collected by a spherical object of radius much larger than the Debye length, in a flowing plasma, is calculated using a particle-in-cell code. The results provide the first rigorous theoretical calibration of a “Mach probe” in a plasma with negligible magnetic field. They are also applicable, for example, to spacecraft-plasma interactions. Ion to e...

Fully self-consistent ion-drag-force calculations for dust in collisional plasmas with an external electric field.

The ion drag force on a spherical dust particle immersed in a flowing plasma with an external electric field is self-consistently calculated using the particle-in-cell code SCEPTIC in the entire range of charge-exchange collisionality. Our results, not based on questionable approximations, extend prior analytic calculations valid only in a few limiting regimes. Particular attention is given to ...

Solvation Force in Hard Ellipsoid Molecular Liquids with Rod-Sphere and Rod- Surface Interactions

In previous work, one of us calculated the Solvation force of hard ellipsoid fluid with hard Gaussian overlap potential using hard needle wall interaction and non-linear equation proposed by Grimson- Rickyazen. In present work, using density functional theory and extended restricted orientation model, the solvation force of hard ellipsoid fluid in presence of more realistic rod- sphere and rod-...

Probe induced voids in a dusty plasma

Dusty plasmas are susceptible to the formation of a ‘‘void,’’ a centimeter-size region within the plasma that is free of dust particles. The boundary between the dust-free plasma ~void! and the dusty plasma is typically quite sharp. Praburam and Goree first reported the appearance of a spoke-shaped, dust-free region in a cloud of 100-nm carbon particles in a radio-frequency discharge formed bet...
